Campeones - Espana

Yes,it's time for the men to report back to their WAGs in case they have forgotten. No more looking out for beer promotions in supermarkets and no more late nights at my sofa munching away snacks. My "holidays" have finally come to an end.The World Cup Championship has finally close its chapters with Spain crowned as the champions.

Spain showed to the world that justice is served as football was won by real footballers, real sportsmen that overcame unsporting and coarse challenges and survived aggressive approach by their opponents throughout the final game. It was an ode to happiness and they truly deserve to be the champions. Spain played soccer with flair, unity and calmness throughout.

Since young, I have always been fascinated by countries like Brazil and Argentina however a new class of Spaniards has arise and shown the world the true beauty of what this game is all about.

I could not relate this personally except people who believe in and played the sport itself. For some I know, it was about which country helped them win the most ka ching during bets. That's their country. For some, it was relating your love of the sport to the players of that country you enjoy watching most. The dream you ever dream as a boy but could never fulfil in your lifetime. So you relate your passion for the sport by supporting the team or country you love most.

There are some who enjoyed the style of counter attacks and fast-pace attacks, countries that score with big scorelines and trashed teams with huge margins. There are some (where I guess I fall under this category) who focus at superb teamwork; Players who dribble clean, pass efficiently and keep trying. It's simply an awe to watch such style of football on the pitch and Spanish football is a classic example of that.

For me, this WC reminds me of a sweet and motivating ending to a long story. Despite the odds and the dirty ways of winning a game,it's a classic tale of a group of men who believe in their craft and skills, worked hard together to overcome everything to pursue for a common goal. Together as a force, it is never to be reckon with.

I woke up late today but I was injected with a dose of motivation . A motivation that reminds me that good photography will always prevail and it will continue to bring everlasting joy and memories to everyone out there that believes in good photography too.

As the Spanish might quote it "No hay mal que por bien no venga"

Is Your Wedding Moments Worth Being Jepardized?

I wanted to share an article which I guess most professional wedding photographers and videographers probably encounter at least once in their career. A common frustration that has been kept in us for a period of time but sadly unavoidable. We can only educate and let time takes its course.

http://www.weddingcinematographersguild.com/2010/03/15/working-with-hobbyistamateur-photographers/

Its for one of these obvious reason why professionals have their preferred working partners :)

It was nice to know that my work was featured in a recent issue of a bridal magazine for outdoor portraits but its even more upsetting to find out that MY image wasnt credited. It was removed and credited wrongly instead. Its like a needle being stung into my heart. Here is the featured image:

The Perception VS The Reality

This is a truthful article that I totally feeeel it and also a good insight for everyone else. Thanx Ron for posting this on FB.

The Wedding Photographers Network 13th Element.

This is gonna be a long article, in fact my longest ever since I actually written something proper. I think it will be a good time for me to express out some of my thoughts and also shared a little inside of me.

We all love photography! Don’t We! The numbers in camera sales and the people taking it up as a hobby or as a side-job is significantly increasing through the years.

Back then, I will spend hours after hours, days after days, after my working hours ( previous job in the military) to learn as much on my craft. It was an addiction then, it is still now! Before Red Co was founded, I felt I needed to know basically how to shoot portraits well. I asked myself how am I ever gonna do weddings if I don’t even have a proper portfolio. Similarly I asked myself: “It is a couple’s wedding! Wedding lei…!! How can anyhow just go shoot! I will jeopardize their lifetime images!” I admitted I did freak out and was pretty lost for a moment. I asked my friends that were getting married whether I could tag to their official wedding photographer, but I was rejected. I was disappointed but I totally understand the implications and seriousness too. I then tried writing emails to bridal studios for job opportunities but none replied. It was frustrating and before I could even shoot, I felt like giving up already.

Months past and nothing happen. The opportunity finally came during one of my friend’s wedding. I was invited as a guest to attend his wedding banquet. However, I asked him whether I could observe his entire wedding instead. No DSLRs, No compact cameras, just purely observation. He was pretty startled by my request however, he agreed. During his wedding, I approached his wedding photographer (during his break time) for questions. He hinted to me that if I was interested to shoot, I could look for his “agent” “Sure can one!” he exclaimed to me. Next thing I know, a phone call was made to his agent and I was shooting on my own that very same weekend. Isn’t it scary! With practically no experience, no knowledge, absolute clueless, a stranger entrust his clients hands into mine? You got to be kidding! My “agent” now only “taught” me by phone. I remembered something like this “You know how to switch on camera right, you know how to use flash right? Then…can lah!”

I was scared shit out of my pants. “This couple has never even meet me before?’ “How can anyone in the right frame of mind engage someone without a portfolio?” “Am I supposedly to follow an official photographer on my first shoot before embarking on my own?” What if this… and what if that?’ My mind was filled with “What ifs, How, When? Die lah!” I couldn’t sleep and spend the whole night finding out answers on the net prior to my first shoot. That’s the best I could do without any form of experience. To shorten things, I spent the first 3 months digesting lots of scolding and insults. Yes.. Haha.. I felt like giving up again. However, I needed to reward myself, and that reward I look for after every wedding shoot was only knowledge. I would go home after each shoot to review on my own work and note down ways I could improve myself. If my agent is going to scold me after each and every wedding shoot, then I better learn something out of the scolding. To pay my bills and feed myself, I would volunteer shooting for my agent every weekends (Sat and Sun). I was given an allowance of $100 for a full day shoot. I would always pray that a typical wedding will end in 12 hours bcos there is no extra wages even I had worked 14 to 16 hours. (I was even told that I am not allowed to return home to bathe in between free hours before the commencement of the banquet. I was “taught” to stay with the couple until the wedding ends – How to shoot with a focus mind at night? ).In fact, there was a period I preferred shooting half day assignments bcos my allowance for 8 hours of shoot is $60…. Heheh..

My parents were worried and I do not blame them for discouraging me to stop wedding photography as a profession back then during my situation. (I had left the RSAF and was unemployed for about half a year)

One day, I decided to call it quits and resume back to job hunting. There was no way I could recover back my savings spent on my part time studies and my daily expenses if I continued getting only $200 a week.

The catalyst of what ignited the start of Red Co was a friend of mine, DC (during our days in the RSAF). He approached me with a good business model and during the next 1 year, we worked well as partners and despite the slow gradual growth of our business, we encountered even more difficulties and more problems as business partners. To add on to our burden, we weren’t earning enough too survive. Things hit hard when we decided to split due to different mindsets and commitments. Red Co was eventually now left me alone to run. It was even harder now without a partner. Along the way, I tried sourcing for DI artists but my experiences with them were sour and it affected Red Co. Eventually, I decided to handle it all by myself till this very day.

The road was rough. I needed to talk to someone, I needed to vent out how I feel. I needed to meet REAL wedding photographers! Bcos I think they are the best “galfriends or wives” haha… that would make good listening ears to my problems.

That’s where I researched and came across WPN- Wedding Photographers Network.

WPN was the brainchild of photography studios 39 East, Plush and Gabriel Mendes. I remembered when I was feeling shitty, I will spend my nights anticipating their next blog entries, hoping to understand and educate myself properly as a full time professional wedding photographer. Their blog posts were like my “painkiller pills” for my business. Like everyone starting out, they too had their stories and these articles written by their personal experiences reminded me to constantly to spur on to this very day. What started out as 3 has now grown over the years to a community of our 12 finest.(www.wpn.sg).Every individual came from all walks of life but all of them shared one common goal and believe in striving to give their very best – to help each other and raise our local standards of wedding photography. Huat ah!

I respected every individual in WPN and seriously, my circle of close friends will know how much I idolize WPN as my wedding photography heros.Hahaha. On my personal note, I used them as our local benchmark to improve myself and to drive myself. If you have read blog entries written by different individuals in WPN, you will always feel that sense of encouragement to explore, experiment and to open our eyes outside of Singapore too. When I finally tried, the first thing I said to myself “F$%^! I am so way behind!”

For the next 3 years, I spend “blog hogging” everywhere and I continued to learn and explore. Its not to imitate others but to circulate myself online around the world in today's wedding photography industry. The result will be: a clear and distinct identification of oneself. Till today I am still learning and it will never stop. In fact, to speed up learning for me is to also share. A simple analogy will be: think of how our bit torrent sites and Apple's Genius work :P

4th Dec 2009 has past, I would say this date marks a major milestone in my career as a wedding photographer. Some say money cant buy it, some say you have to work hard to earn it. I received the best news I could ever received as a wedding photographer.
The acceptance into WPN! I couldn’t sleep well that night, I had butterflies in my stomach too. It is the exact feeling I had when I proposed to my wife. Haha.It is a long fulfilling dream that came true for me to be finally part of the family. The aspiration to always be a WPN photographer! That's better than any award!

I hope to work well together to continue this journey and to grow old with them like any family.

I shall end here.If you had read all the way here, I thank you for your time.

Tomorrow, a new chapter begins.
